We are
Public Mediation originated from the Public Mediation Programme at the University of Amsterdam. This programme was established in 2014 by Alexander Rinnooy Kan, together with David Laws and Martien Kuitenbrouwer, as a joint initiative of the Faculty of Law and the Faculty of Social and Behavioural Sciences.
The programme has contributed to the development of public mediation as a field of practice in the Netherlands and has been internationally oriented from the outset. It collaborated with leading researchers and professionals in Europe and the United States, and built a sustainable network connecting research, public governance practice, and conflict mediation.
Since 2018, Public Mediation has operated as an independent practice for process facilitation, mediation, and dialogue in the public domain. The organisation works on issues in which governance relations come under pressure, societal controversy arises, or decision-making has stalled.
Role and approach
Public Mediation fulfils an independent role in situations of interdependence and conflict. The team combines experience in public administration, conflict mediation, and research.
Rather than primarily steering toward legal procedures or political escalation, the focus is on carefully designing and facilitating a process in which the parties involved articulate their interests and work together to reach workable agreements.
In addition to the core team, we collaborate with an international network of researchers and experienced professionals. This international network contributes to the continuous reflection on and development of the field.
The aim of structured reflection is not necessarily to reach consensus. Rather, it is to enable groups of stakeholders to gain insight into the dynamics of the conflict themselves. In this way, relationships can be restored and those involved can move forward together.
