Marc Rijnveld
Director and Public Mediator

Marc Rijnveld is Director and co-founder of Public Mediation. As a public administration expert, he has been working for more than thirty years on complex decision-making processes in the public and semi-public sectors, serving in various roles including mediator, researcher, and project manager. He believes that careful process facilitation deserves greater recognition among governments seeking to address complex policy issues effectively.
In his work, the focus is not only on decision-making, but above all on the way decisions are reached: who is involved in the process, the history of a project, how interests are weighed, and the broader social context influencing the process. He argues that many public issues do not primarily stall because of disagreements, but because of insufficiently designed processes, unclear roles, and inadequate attention to underlying interests and relationships.
Participation has been a recurring theme throughout his career. He has been involved in, among other initiatives, a series of dialogue sessions on changes in the living environment of disadvantaged urban neighborhoods (National Climate Platform) and the design and implementation of the Amsterdam District Panels for the Municipality of Amsterdam.
